How the arcade under the gum tree pays its way

Kooka Arcade charges nobody. Creek Snake, Pond Pop and Gumnut Merge open straight away, with no account to create and no name to give. Even so, the server sends a bill every month and each new trail, pond or board eats up evenings of work; this page names who covers that.

Free for players, paid for by adverts

The money is meant to come from advertising. Look for boxes headed “Advertisement” on the pages you read rather than play: the front page, the level lists, the rules hub and each guide, never more than three to a page. Those boxes are the only adverts the arcade has, and a page with a running game gets none of them.

Hooking up Google AdSense is still under way. Until that switch is thrown, each box holds a short note of ours inviting companies in, and not one line of advertising code reaches your browser. Afterwards Google takes over the very same boxes at the very same height, so nothing on the page jolts sideways or down while it loads.

Sponsoring a game

Another route is sponsorship: a company backs one game, or a run of numbered levels such as the hard ponds or a stretch of creek trails. Its block opens with “Sponsored by” and the backer's name in plain letters, which keeps it from passing for a bit of the game. Backing a game buys the name a place on the page, nothing more: rules, levels and everyone's records stay exactly as they were.

Things that will not happen here

  • No advert inside a playing field, laid over a game or tucked in beside its buttons.
  • Nothing to buy that makes a run easier or a score higher: every player gets the same rocks, bubbles and tiles.
  • No selling or passing on of visitor data; we do not collect any to begin with.
  • No pop-up windows that cover a game while you are in the middle of it.
